When Mom's Happy, Everyone's Happy
Published in Paperback by Cardinal House Pub (January, 1998)
Authors: Susan Z. Dawes, Steve Dittbenner, and Kirsten McBride
Average review score:

Well Written
Susan Dawes wrote a wonderful book. It's very easily followed and very easily applied. She has some wonderful suggestions in her book including but not limited to: ways to take a holistic approach to your life, things to do to improve your relationship with your husband, ideas for giving yourself a break and creative ideas for shortening your days (when you are at home with children). I read this book from front to back several times and still reference it periodically. I agree when mom's happy, everyone's happy and this book brings me one step closer to happiness.

This is a must read book for moms of all ages!
Susan Dawes concisely summarizes day to day strategies for enhancing personal and family life. As she says "When mom's happy, everybody's happy". She presents a variety of suggestions for fulfillment whether one works outside the home or is a stay-at-home mom. She makes wonderful suggestions regarding dealing with demands and pressures facing American families. Each chapter is chocked full of great ideas that I have used over and over. These include topics from taking care of yourself to discipline. Her social work background is evident but the book is presented in a very readable fashion. As a woman's health nurse I recommend it to expectant moms as well as moms who are already experiencing parenting. It is a must reading!

A happy and helpful read for Mom and her whole family.
"When Mom's Happy, Everyone's Happy" is a brisk and lively read, but more importantly, it is also an excellent and insightful resource for modern Moms (and their husbands and families) in a stressful world whose demands compete with the good and enjoyable family life. Written in a light and highly readable manner, the first section provides valuable, very useable tips and ideas for Mom; the second, for the whole family. I highly recommend this book for Moms and Dads and Children seeking more from their lives and relationships with each other. I have found it useful and recommend it to new mothers and learners of all ages and types. "When Mom's Happy, Everyone's Happy" is a happy and helpful read for Mom and her whole family.

The Coaching Skill-Builder Activity Pack
Published in Ring-bound by AMACOM (15 April, 2001)
Authors: Ian Cunningham, Graham Dawes, and Ben Bennett
Average review score:

Practical resource
This learning resource is an excellent addition to any developers' library of materials. It has clear, practical advice on how to develop effective coaches as well as a collection of fine exercises. The exercises are mostly based around real life practice. Too often these kinds of collections are full of exercises that look fun to do but are disconnected from work. This pack does not fall in to that trap. The exercises are graded - from easy to use to those that are more advanced. However the authors give very clear guidance on how to use them and show some examples of how the exercises could be put together to create workshops on different aspects of coaching.

I would recommend this pack unreservedly. It meets a real need - organizations desperately need to develop the coaching capability of their managers and this material will really fill a gap in the market.

Very Valuable Material
I have found this material very valuable for developing managers as coaches. The big plus for me is that the exercises are mostly based around real work. I find that managers do not like artificial exercises that seem too disconnected from real work. Also the provision of the material for use in workshops is first rate. Finally I liked the fact that the authors have given guidance on how to put the materials together to produce a coherent workshop.

Excellent resource
This is an excellent resource for trainers. It has many original exercises as well as clear guidance on what to do with the matierla. Also the introductory material gives a clear jargon-free explanation of the value of coaching. It is the best on the market, as far as I can see.

Insightful and a pleasure to read
The book is well structured, with each chapter demonstrating one aspect of how irrationality keeps creeping up in our day to day decision making. The style is clear an pleasant.

Highly recommanded.

An excellent book
Dawes is the master at identifying what works from what only looks like it works. An important book that will stand the test of time.

Excellent. A must read for academics.
In a simple style, rich with examples, Dawes explains many aspects of how simple principles of rationality can help resolve otherwise complex choice situations.

The Bird Book and the Bird Feeder
Published in Paperback by Workman Publishing Company (December, 1988)
Authors: Neil Dawe and Karen Dawe
Average review score:

Best Small Gift I've Ever Received
I am in no way an expert birdwatcher, but this book and birdfeeder are so much fun to use. Like another reviewer, I was skeptical of birds actually coming to the feeder. In less than a week, they had not only found it, but were fighting to get inside it! The book is small, but well written and very informative for all ages, especially if you know very little about birdwatching. It makes the common birds you will see easy to identify. The feeder is great because it can be attached to a window pane, making up-close viewing possible from inside your house.
A great gift!

The book is great and easy to follow; GREAT birdfeeder!
I purchased this book just after my son was born. I saw it in a flyer I received in the mail and thought it would be a great educational experience for my son to see the birds right outside of our window. Not long after he turned 2, I installed it on our living room window. A few days went by and I was afraid the birds weren't going to visit it. Boy, was I wrong! They absolutely love it! It is not the only birdfeeder that I have, but it certainly is most popular. The smaller birds absolutely adore it. In bad weather, they hop right inside and eat and sit a spell. It has brought much joy to our family. My son thinks everyone sees birds up close and doesn't realize what a gift this is!

Sunset Boulevard: Cruising the Heart of Los Angeles
Published in Paperback by Times (Los Angeles Times) (May, 2002)
Author: Amy Dawes
Average review score:

Visual feast and rich tales about a fascinating thoroughfare
Sunset Boulevard lives large in legend and lore (did I say that?), and this book presents myriad facets of the long and meandering street, one of the most famed in America. From interesting anecdotes (including the story of how an entire school was buried beneath what is now Dodger Stadium) to hundreds of elucidating and entertaining photos and illustrations, some historical and many contemporary, the book is a compelling and engaging treatise. While some of the subject matter isn't of inherent interest to me, the author's writing pulled me in to many a tale, and rewarded my attention handsomely. The maps and address/phone information are useful for touring the boulevard and its many neighborhoods, as listings present to the visitor and native alike lots of places to eat, drink and otherwise acculturate. Sunset Boulevard itself is, of course, but one stretch of asphalt, but there's a wealth of history -- and plenty of current interest -- that lies along its 23-mile length.

An astonishing story and a captivating read
From start to finish, this remarkable book captures the essence of the legends that have shaped both the lore and the reality of Los Angeles. Sunset Boulevard literally crosses the heart of Los Angeles, touching along its route to the Pacific Ocean many neighborhoods that define the city's diversity and drama both past and present. This book culls stories of the past and ties them to the present, explaining every step of the way how Sunset Boulevard helped make Los Angeles what it is today. The maps of each neighborhood show both present-day landmarks as well as those gone-but-not-forgotten. Each chapter is devoted to a specific neighborhood along the 23-mile route and contains lists (including, happily, addresses and phone numbers!!) of restaurants, museums, nightclubs and hot shopping sites worth visiting. All in all, this is a book for both tourists and locals alike.

Reggae Poetry Organizer
Kwame Dawes is a brilliant poet, critic, short story writer and now add anthologist. He has put together an anthology that reveals the ethos of our generation. He has, again, pointed us in a useful direction.

A LESSON IN REGGAE
A refreshing revelation of poetry that moves to the spirit of reggae. This anthology with reggae movements is another "about time" in the publication of Caribbean literature. I salute Kwame Dawes for bringing forth such a rhythmic collection of poems that give homage to so many of the founders of the reggae beat. From Marley to Patra, from the chaos of living in Babylon and beyond. I recommend WHEEL AND COME AGAIN to all lovers and listeners of REGGAE.

The Bakelite Jewelry Book
Published in Hardcover by Abbeville Press, Inc. (November, 1988)
Authors: Corinne Davidov and Ginny R. Dawes
Average review score:

Still the premiere book on Bakelite jewelry!
The Bakelite Jewelry Book by Davidov and Dawes was publishedin 1988 and it was the first book I bought when I started collectingBakelite jewelry several years ago. Big and beautiful, with wonderful pictures, this book does a great job of showing the variety and personality of this fun jewelry while also educating the reader about the history of Bakelite. Unfortunately, the price guide in the back is now outdated. This book is a visual feast and even though I now have a shelf full of books on bakelite it is still the first book I grab when I want to check on a piece!

Rational Choice in an Uncertain World : The Psychology of Judgement and Decision Making
Published in Paperback by Sage Publications (15 June, 2001)
Authors: Robyn M. Dawes and Reid Hastie
Average review score:

An interesting read
I read this book as part of a college course on cognition. It was defintely the most interesting of the 3 books we read in this class.

The book effectively teaches you how to go about making well-thought-out decisions. The text in itself is easy to read and comprehend. There are also many apt examples, both abstract and from everyday life. This combination ensures a successful reading of this book.

While I would have probably never read this book if not for the class I took, I'm glad I did and would recommend this people from all walks of life. Being able to make a good, well-thought-out, rational decision is the best skill one can have.

Helps you understand decisions -- and life, too
The authors emphasize that decision-making is a skill that can be learned and improved. As I work with career changers, I have become convinced that most of us have not learned this skill, and most of us could benefit from a careful reading of this book.

Hastie and Dawes present results of scientific psychological research, using language that is easy for the ordinary person to understand. Their examples come from everyday life and news stories: Chernobyl, the "hot hand" theory of basketball, mammography.

I would also recommend this book to any students of psychology, including those entering graduate school in social psychology, marketing or management. Hastie and Dawes demonstrate that academic studies needn't be dry, but in fact yield fascinating conclusions that are widely relevant. At the same time, they show the way researchers think and introduce the notion of probability in a way that makes readers want to learn more.

A great update to a classic
The addition of Reid Hastie as an author to Robyn Dawes' classic text on judgment and decision making was superb choice. This edition appears to be written very much in Hastie's voice, from the perspective of a cognitive psychologist. Moreover, we find additional attention paid to algebraic models, which was something that was missing from previous editions. Hastie and Dawes ranks as one of the essential readings for the judgment and decision-making field.
